VIDEO INTRODUCTION:
Hi everybody! In 2014, Modi ji was elected as the Prime Minister of India, and he got the entire nation excited with the idea of Smart Cities. The BJP government promised to revolutionise the country with 100 Smart Cities — cities powered by AI, machine learning, IoT, zero traffic, spotless roads, and a vision to transform Indian cities to European standards. Basically, the vision was to do something like that. And the fun part is that after spending ₹1.64 lakh crore, the government says that 94% of the total urban projects have already been completed!

But sadly, this is what our Smart Cities look like today. Mumbai still floods with one heavy rain. It still takes two hours to travel 10 km in Bangalore. And Delhi’s air is still so toxic that breathing it equals smoking 10 cigarettes a day! And here’s the irony — India is now a $4 trillion economy, and we are trying to beat Germany and Japan, and yet none of our cities even come close to the standards of either of these countries.

So the question is: what exactly happened to the Smart City Mission? Was it just a marketing gimmick, or did the vision really make sense? And if it was so promising, why couldn’t the government execute it to perfection? And as citizens, what should we learn from the failure of the government?
