Mercoledì 29 luglio, davanti alla Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee presieduta dal repubblicano Rand Paul, l'ex direttore del NIAID ha invocato il Quinto Emendamento per ben 111 volte, rifiutandosi di rispondere alle domande sull'origine del #covid19 e sulla gestione della pandemia. Nel suo unico intervento, Fauci ha dichiarato che, per quanto gli dispiacesse farlo, su consiglio dei suoi legali avrebbe esercitato il diritto a non autoincriminarsi, accusando al contempo Paul di un'"ossessione" nei suoi confronti finalizzata a vederlo, nelle sue parole, "dietro le sbarre".
L'audizione arriva dopo la pubblicazione, da parte dello stesso Paul, di oltre mille pagine del diario pandemico di Fauci, e si è chiusa con l'annuncio di un voto, la prossima settimana, per l'oltraggio al Congresso. Poche ore dopo, il procuratore generale della Florida James Uthmeier ha reso noto che il suo ufficio avvierà un'indagine autonoma, sottolineando come la "mancanza di franchezza" di Fauci verso il Congresso sia "inaccettabile" e ricordando che la grazia concessa da Joe Biden copre solo eventuali reati federali, non quelli perseguibili a livello statale.
