Menteri Lingkungan Hidup menjelaskan penambangan ini dikelola oleh PT Gag Nikel (PT GN).
Pulau Gag dengan luas 6.300 km² termasuk kategori pulau kecil yang berdasarkan UU No. 27 Tahun 2007 dan revisinya dikecualikan dari pengelolaan pertambangan.
Namun, PT GN mendapat pengecualian karena termasuk 13 perusahaan yang boleh melanjutkan kontrak karya di kawasan hutan lindung.
Hanif menyebutkan izin tambang sudah lengkap, termasuk IUP, persetujuan lingkungan, dan izin pinjam pakai wilayah hutan.
Ia menegaskan hampir seluruh area Raja Ampat termasuk kawasan hutan, termasuk lokasi PT GN beroperasi.
Sementara itu, Menteri ESDM Bahlil Lahadalia mengklaim tambang nikel yang beroperasi saat ini hanya PT Gag Nikel, anak usaha PT Aneka Tambang Tbk (Antam).
Bahlil menjelaskan PT Gag Nikel awalnya dikelola asing pada 1997-1998, tapi setelah pihak asing mundur, pengelolaan diserahkan kepada PT Antam.
Penyerahan ini membuat tambang tersebut resmi dikelola oleh BUMN Indonesia.
Dengan demikian, operasi tambang nikel di Raja Ampat tetap berjalan sesuai peraturan dan pengawasan pemerintah.
