🏺 The story of asbestos begins nearly 6,000 years ago. Ancient civilizations discovered that certain naturally occurring minerals could withstand fire and extreme heat better than almost anything else available at the time. Archaeological evidence suggests asbestos was mixed into pottery and used in various household items thousands of years ago. Over the centuries, its unique properties fascinated civilizations across Europe and Asia. But it was during the Industrial Revolution that asbestos truly became a global phenomenon. From steam engines and power plants to ships, trains, automobiles, insulation, and construction materials, asbestos was everywhere. It was cheap, durable, fire-resistant, chemically stable, and seemingly perfect for an industrializing world. For decades, it was marketed as a miracle material that could make buildings safer and industries more efficient.
☠️ However, the same microscopic fibers that made asbestos so useful also made it incredibly dangerous. When asbestos-containing materials are damaged, cut, drilled, weathered, or broken, tiny fibers can be released into the air. These fibers are so small that they can be inhaled deep into the lungs without people even noticing. Once inside the body, they can remain trapped for decades.
