Who were the first Filipino migrants in America? The United States has the largest Filipino diaspora population in the world by far, mainly due to their proximity across the Pacific ocean and the Philippines' status as a former American territory, however the Filipino American history actually stretches back far before this. The first Filipinos to step foot on American soil were actually under the Spanish hundreds of years ago, either as fishermen, soldiers or slaves and they remained when the territory passed to US hands in the 1800s. These Filipinos intermixed with neighboring groups such as the Islenos and Cajuns in Louisiana and went on to fight in the Civil War and many other conflicts and their descendants can still be found in the region today.
