Die Europäische Zentralbank mit Sitz in Frankfurt am Main hat wichtige Aufgaben. Sie produziert das Geld, sie organisiert das Zahlungsverkehrssystem, also, dass Gelder überwiesen werden können und Banken funktionieren und sie beaufsichtigt, mit anderen Organisationen, das Bankensystem. Außerdem legt sie den Leitzins fest - das merken Verbraucher dann zum Beispiel an steigenden oder fallendenden Kredit- oder Kontozinsen. Denn Ziel der EZB ist es auch, die Inflation in gewissen Grenzen zu halten.Seit 2019 ist die Französin Christine Lagarde Chefin der EZB. Die erste Frau, die dieses Amt ausübt.
