IS 15 MINUTES REALLY ENOUGH TO WARM UP YOUR SINGING VOICE? Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy

There are a lot of opinions out there on how long you should warm up your voice before singing. One of the things I hear people say is that you should ONLY warm up for 15 or 20 minutes.

That’s so much baloney!

Because the truth is, there's a lot more to warming up your voice than just watching the clock.

Think about it. Whether you're an athlete, an instrumentalist, or a singer, you need proper preparation and conditioning.

Personally, I often spend an hour or more warming up my voice before singing for long periods of time.

Why?

Because I've found that when I don't warm up correctly, I don't have the same vocal endurance, tone, range, or consistency that I've come to expect from my voice.

When you know that your voice responds the way you want it to, you can sing for longer periods, in whatever style or genre. And you won’t have to worry about hitting that next note!

But there's something else I want you to remember.
It's not practice that makes perfect. It's PERFECT PRACTICE that makes perfect!

That doesn't just apply to learning a song, a vocal lick, or a solo. It applies to the way you train your voice, how you warm up, and the way you approach singing altogether.

So YES, you should absolutely warm up your voice. But don't get caught up in the idea that there's some “magic number” of minutes that works for everyone.

Train your voice correctly, develop good habits, and build the consistency that will give you the confidence to sing the way you want to sing.

Your voice is an instrument. Take the time to learn how to use it!
