Nel corso di un intervento pubblico, il presidente della CEI Matteo Maria Zuppi ha commentato lo slogan “Dio, patria e famiglia”, affermando di condividere i tre concetti ma invitando a riflettere sul loro significato reale e sul rapporto tra valori religiosi, identità nazionale e politica.Zuppi ha sottolineato come il tema della patria debba essere distinto dai nazionalismi, ricordando il pensiero di Alcide De Gasperi e il ruolo dell’Europa come argine alle derive nazionaliste che hanno segnato la storia del continente.
