Stranded ships in the Strait of Hormuz could create an unexpected ecological threat far beyond the Persian Gulf. With large numbers of vessels remaining idle for unusually long periods, their submerged hulls can become breeding grounds for algae, microbes, barnacles, mussels and other marine organisms. When these ships eventually resume their journeys, invasive species could travel across oceans and reach vulnerable ecosystems and ports around the world. Scientists warn that organisms adapted to the Gulf’s extreme heat and harsh conditions may be especially capable of surviving long voyages and establishing themselves in new environments.
