Who are the Tejanos? The Tejanos are the descendants of the original Spanish and Mexican settlers of Texas towns such as Laredo, San Antonio, Goliad and El Paso. Today they are greatly outnumbered by more recent Mexican immigrants, although the Tejanos have preserved some of their unique culture such as the Tejano style of music which is common in much of Southern, Central and West Texas today. The Tejanos faced several difficulties during their centuries-long history in the region including raids by the Apache and Comanche as well as various expulsions and conflict with the Anglo-American settlers. There may be as many as half a million or more of their descendants in Texas today although their identity has slowly been eroded away as they assimilate into the wider society.
