What's Directly Above And Below The Sun?
We’ve mapped planets, tracked thousands of asteroids, and sent probes beyond Pluto. But directly above and below the Sun lies a region of space we barely monitor, and it may be one of the most important blind spots in our entire planetary defense system.This video explores what exists beyond the flat orbital plane of our solar system, why reaching the Sun’s polar regions is so difficult, and how the laws of orbital mechanics effectively trap most spacecraft inside the ecliptic. NASA’s Ulysses mission managed to escape that plane once, and discovered chaotic magnetic fields, extreme solar winds, and an environment far more violent than scientists expected.
The problem goes beyond understanding the Sun. Interstellar objects like ‘Oumuamua can approach from steep angles that are much harder for our observatories to detect, potentially giving humanity far less warning if something dangerous ever heads directly toward Earth.
To truly watch the entire sky, we may need spacecraft capable of breaking through one of the hardest barriers in spaceflight.
Because the next asteroid threat might not come from ahead of us, it could come from above.
