En mayo de 2019, un usuario anónimo en 4chan publicó una foto granulada de una habitación vacía. A partir de ahí, se creó una mitología de la era cibernética: los espacios liminales deudores del videojuego y del creepypasta. De la mano de Kane Parsons, de 20 años, y de la productora A24, esta mitología ha llegado al cine en 2026.Una extraña puerta aparece en el sótano de una tienda de muebles. Cuando el paciente de una terapeuta desaparece en una dimensión más allá de la realidad, ella deberá adentrarse en lo desconocido para intentar rescatarlo. Tras publicar la serie web en enero de 2022, varios estudios se pusieron en contacto con Parsons para así proponerle una posible adaptación cinematográfica. En febrero de 2023, se anunció oficialmente el inicio del rodaje de la adaptación de The Backrooms, basada en los vídeos de Parsons, quien también dirigiría la película. Inicialmente, Roberto Patino iba a escribir el guion, pero fue sustituido por Will Soodik. El rodaje comenzó en el verano de 2025 y concluyó en agosto del mismo año.
Backrooms se estrenó en Estados Unidos por A24 el 29 de mayo de 2026. La película recibió críticas positivas y recaudó 212,6 millones de dólares en todo el mundo, convirtiéndose en el mayor éxito de taquilla y estreno de A24 en Estados Unidos, y haciendo de Parsons el cineasta más joven en alcanzar el número uno en la taquilla estadounidense.
