“How much is too much?” This is the question I found myself asking throughout my playthrough of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.
In a lot of ways, this game is the ideal sequel. It’s bigger, more ambitious, and is packed to the brim with content. Despite all of that, the game isn’t better. Neither when compared to the previous entry nor the title it takes its namesake from. Rebirth is a game that’s as frustrating as it is impressive. For every moment that blew me away, there was another that left me speechless, and not in the way that Square intended. This is without a doubt the largest game I have ever played in my life. While I will congratulate Square for sticking to their vision and seeing it through, it proved that an old adage still rings true. Bigger isn’t always better, and Rebirth is too big for its own good. Here’s why that’s a problem
When I heard that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth was going to be an open world game, I was honestly very excited. One of the best parts of the original is the feeling you got when you left Midgar for the first time. After spending what felt like an eternity inside of the walls of the dystopian city, the reveal that it was only one part of a much larger world was breathtaking. Yeah, nowadays it’s not the prettiest vista in the world, but back in 1997, this was nothing short of impressive. It felt like there was a secret hidden in every nook and cranny. The world was reactive and would evolve throughout the journey. The world was truly alive and lived in, though it never comes at the expense of what we came here for. The overworld and hubs in the classic ff7 serve the experience in a very particular way. It’s supplemental, like a nice side dish to the main course.
The first part of the remake trilogy did a great job at fleshing out and expanding Midgar. It took a small slice from the original game and added enough content to justify its standalone approach. We could argue about the finer details all day; the prospect of every area in Rebirth getting this amount of love and attention was hard to ignore. That, and the idea of finally being able to stretch out wings after such a linear game was appealing. It’s been nearly 30 years since the classic, and technology has advanced incredibly in that time. Overworlds in rpg’s function the way they do because of limitations. It’s a way to feature different environments in your game while still retaining some form of immersion. It’s definitely a step up from standard level select screens but is now pretty archaic. Games have had seamless open worlds for years, and a lot of new players struggle to get into that old school mindset. It’s unfair for sure, but it’s just the way that it is. Because of this, Rebirth is tasked with trying to appeal to two different groups. The old heads that played the ps1 title and want an accurate recreation, and the new fans that are just looking for a good time. If there’s one thing to say about Rebirth, it’s that I find its level of confidence to be admirable. Instead of easing their way into the pool, Square decided to just jump right into the deep end and face this challenge head-on.
