In the early 20th century, a Native American nation in Oklahoma became extraordinarily wealthy after oil was discovered beneath their land.

But their wealth soon became a deadly target.

During the 1920s, members of the Osage Nation began dying one after another under mysterious circumstances.

Some were shot.

Some died in explosions.

Others were declared to have died from natural causes.

But what if these deaths were all connected?

What followed was one of the darkest criminal conspiracies in American history.

At the center of the story was a fortune built from oil royalties and a system of inherited wealth known as headrights. As members of the Osage community died, those rights could pass to their heirs — creating a powerful financial motive for murder.

The death of Anna Brown in 1921 became one of the key cases. Soon, members of her family and other Osage people were also dying.

The growing fear became known as the “Reign of Terror.”

Eventually, the Bureau of Investigation — the agency that would later become the FBI — was brought into the case.
