In August 1975, Typhoon Nina brought extraordinary rainfall to China’s Henan Province, pushing the Banqiao Reservoir far beyond its designed capacity. During the early hours of August 8, water overtopped the dam and caused it to collapse, releasing an enormous volume of water onto the communities below. What began as the failure of a single major dam quickly developed into one of history’s most devastating cascading infrastructure disasters.
The floodwater released from Banqiao travelled across the plains as a massive surge, overwhelming rivers, embankments and downstream reservoirs. At the same time, the nearby Shimantan Dam and numerous smaller dams were already struggling with the same extreme rainfall. Together, these failures and the resulting chain reaction caused 62 dams in total—including Banqiao—to collapse, meaning Banqiao was part of a disaster that destroyed more than 60 other dams across the region.
The catastrophe was intensified by limited spillway capacity, sediment-blocked gates, communication failures and delayed evacuation warnings. Roads, railway lines and communication networks were destroyed, leaving millions of people isolated. Estimates of the death toll vary widely, ranging from tens of thousands of direct flood deaths to much higher totals when the later effects of disease and famine are included.
The Banqiao Dam disaster demonstrates how extreme weather, engineering limitations and failed emergency communication can combine to turn one structural failure into a regional catastrophe.
