@iamwithdhanyavarmaData published on May 6, 2026, revealed that 5,737 dowry deaths were recorded across the country in 2024. In simple terms, that translates to 16 women losing their lives every day in cases associated with dowry harassment, domestic cruelty or suspicious deaths after marriage. Two cases in Palakkad and Thiruvananthapuram have happened where the wives were hacked to death by their husbands.
On June 26th, Arathy, 26, was found hanging dead in the bedroom of her rented accommodation at Attukal, where she had been living with her husband Athul, 32, for the past six months. Arathy spoke to her mother over the phone shortly before her death and informed her about the alleged assault. They said she had once again shared photographs showing injuries on her body.
The cases concerning Twisha Sharma and Deepika Nagar are still fresh in our minds and from Kerala alone we have more than three such cases of Domestic Violence flaring up in the lats two months alone.
In this conversation we talk To Adv Shaila Rani, who is a family court lawyer. She explains the legal provisions available to protect oneself from Domestic Violence and Abuse.
The Domestic Violence and Prevention Act: It is a crucial piece of legislation aimed at protecting women from violence within the family and relief from domestic violence. The Act empowers women to lodge complaints, seek protection orders, and access legal aid. It also mandates the protection of women's rights and the establishment of shelters and medical facilities to support victims.
