What began as a routine dredging operation off the coast of Indonesia turned into one of the most surprising archaeological discoveries in decades. Scientists recovered thousands of fossil fragments from the seafloor, including 140,000-year-old remains of Homo erectus, revealing evidence of a lost world that once connected much of Southeast Asia. The discovery shattered the long-standing belief that ancient humans on Java lived in isolation and showed that the region was once part of a vast continent known as Sundaland, where rivers, forests, grasslands, and giant animals stretched across areas now buried beneath the ocean.
