Tearing Down a Chimney in 2 Hours (Start to Finish) | Home Addition Ep. 2
We had to take down this 1979 chimney to connect our home addition — and I'd never done it before. Armed with a mini excavator, hammer chisel, and a jackhammer, here's how it went (spoiler: it only took about 2 hours). This chimney originally served a wood stove in the basement, which we removed during the remodel — that stove now lives on in our backyard hockey rink warming house, and we installed a new wood stove on the first floor instead.

In this video:
Breaking apart the chimney blocks above the roof, one at a time, with a rotary hammer drill and chisel
Using the mini excavator to push and collapse the main chimney structure
Removing the base/foundation with a jackhammer (first time using this tool — $150 on Amazon)
Hauling off 3,200 lbs of concrete debris (cost: $77 to dump)
Total time: about 2 hours for the chimney, plus 1.5 hours for disposal runs
This is Episode 2 of our Home Addition series, where we're documenting the entire build from start to finish — the wins, the mistakes, and the real costs involved. If you're new here, welcome — I'm Pete, and I hope this gives you ideas or at least a good look at what's involved in a project like this.
