You Can’t See the Picture from Inside the Frame | Trey Herlitz-Ferguson | TEDxBoston
In this raw and deeply personal talk, Trey Herlitz-Ferguson recounts the moment his life split in two—the day addiction, anxiety, and identity collapse finally caught up with him. Told through poetry, storytelling, and lived experience, he traces his path from a high-functioning, socially celebrated young man to homelessness, desperation, and ultimately, recovery. What unfolds is not a redemption fantasy, but an honest exploration of what it means to sit with discomfort, surrender false identities, and rebuild from the inside out. From wilderness therapy in the Utah desert to learning how to regulate anxiety, release codependency, and redefine self-worth, Trey shows how real change begins when we stop running from pain and start facing it with support. Trey Ferguson is a recovery coach, speaker, and mentor whose work is grounded in lived experience, vulnerability, and service. He grew up in Westchester, New York, where he spent most of his childhood outdoors—playing sports, exploring nature, and constantly pushing his physical limits. For much of his adolescence, Trey was a dedicated hockey player, driven by the dream of competing at the highest level. When a serious injury ended his hockey career, the sudden loss of identity sent Trey into a downward spiral marked by addiction, anxiety, and self-sabotage. That path ultimately led him to Legacy Outdoor Adventures in Utah, where wilderness therapy became the turning point. Now based in Southern California, Trey runs his own aftercare recovery coaching program, working primarily with adolescent and young adult men. Trey’s work centers on a simple but profound belief: healing begins when we stop hiding from who we are and learn how to live with purpose, clarity, and care for others.
