Why did Spain descend into civil war in 1936? A military coup was supposed to overthrow the Republic. Instead, it split the country, armed rival movements, and opened the door to intervention by Hitler and Mussolini. In the first episode of our Spanish Civil War series, Kings and Generals explores how a declining empire became a battleground between competing visions of Spain. From the fall of the monarchy and the birth of the Second Republic to land reform, religious conflict, and the Asturias uprising, we trace the divisions that brought the country to breaking point. Discover how Emilio Mola organized the conspiracy, why government leaders failed to stop it, and how Francisco Franco took command of the Army of Africa. Follow the uprising from Spanish Morocco to mainland Spain, where Nationalist victories in Seville contrasted with Republican resistance in Madrid and Barcelona. With Spain divided and Franco’s strongest troops blocked across the Strait of Gibraltar, German and Italian aircraft helped change the balance. We explain the airlift that brought the Army of Africa to the mainland and set the stage for the Nationalist advance on Madrid. Subscribe to follow the battles, foreign interventions, and political struggles that shaped Spain’s future.
