Venice is the only city in the world built on water—and up close, it seems almost unreal.The city sits on over 100 small islands connected by more than 400 bridges, with canals instead of streets. What few people realize is that the entire structure rests on millions of wooden piles (oak and alder) driven into the lagoon's mud over 1,500 years ago—wood that, in the absence of oxygen, has effectively petrified over time rather than rotting.
I spent a lot of time walking around Venice, not just around Piazza San Marco and Rialto, but also through the smaller streets where there are far fewer people.
And honestly, I liked those parts the most. You walk past old houses with the water right at the doorstep, gondolas tied to old iron rings, laundry hanging from the windows and little bridges that seem to appear out of nowhere.
In some places it's surprisingly quiet. No cars, no traffic, just the sound of the water, your footsteps on the stone and a church bell somewhere in the distance.
And then you turn another corner and there’s something else to see. I think that’s what makes Venice so much fun to walk around.
I walked this in early July under bright summer light, capturing both the famous landmarks and the secret back alleys. It’s a slow, steady walk through two very different sides of the floating city.
