SALUD MENTAL | ¿Por qué romantizamos el TRASTORNO MENTAL?

¿Por qué seguimos asociando el sufrimiento con la genialidad? ¿De dónde viene esa idea del artista atormentado, del científico excéntrico o del genio incomprendido que necesariamente tiene que sufrir para crear algo extraordinario?
En esta nueva serie "HISTORIA DE LA PSICOLOGÍA" tenemos como objetivo descubrir cómo hemos construido nuestra idea de la psique humana. En este segundo vídeo viajamos 500 años atrás, hasta la Florencia del Renacimiento, para descubrir los orígenes históricos de una idea que todavía sigue muy presente: que la tristeza, la melancolía, la rareza e incluso determinados trastornos mentales esconden algún tipo de talento excepcional. Conoceremos a Marsilio Ficino, la Academia Platónica de Florencia y una sorprendente teoría atribuida a Aristóteles: ¿por qué tantos filósofos, artistas, políticos y poetas excepcionales parecen ser melancólicos?

Bilis negra, Saturno, astrología, neoplatonismo y medicina renacentista terminaron construyendo uno de los arquetipos más poderosos de nuestra cultura: el genio melancólico.

Veremos cómo cambió nuestra manera de entender la mente entre la Edad Media y el Renacimiento; cómo Alberto Durero convirtió la melancolía en una imagen de la genialidad; cómo Robert Burton escribió una monumental Anatomía de la melancolía; cómo comenzaron a aparecer instituciones específicamente destinadas a personas consideradas «locas» y cómo, poco a poco, Europa empezó a preguntarse si la mente podía estudiarse utilizando las mismas herramientas con las que comenzábamos a estudiar la naturaleza. Porque antes de que existieran la psicología, la psiquiatría o la neurociencia, tuvimos que responder una pregunta mucho más básica: ¿Qué es exactamente eso que llamamos mente?

Y quizá entender de dónde procede el mito del genio atormentado nos ayude también a comprender por qué todavía hoy confundimos con tanta facilidad sufrimiento, enfermedad mental, creatividad y genialidad.
