Neue Angriffe verschärfen die Lage. Die USA reagierten mit Schlägen gegen proiranische Milizen im Irak. Zuvor hatten Iran und verbündete Gruppen US-Stützpunkte in Jordanien angegriffen. Die amerikanischen Streitkräfte wehrten die Angriffe ab.
US-Präsident Donald Trump kündigte bei Fox News einen massiven Gegenschlag an. Bereits vor knapp zwei Wochen waren bei Angriffen auf US-Stützpunkte in Jordanien zwei amerikanische Soldaten getötet worden. Trump nahm ihre Särge mit versteinerter Miene in Empfang.
Zugleich wächst die Sorge vor einem Einsatz amerikanischer Bodentruppen. Experten hatten gewarnt, dass Luftangriffe auf unterirdische iranische Atomanlagen nur begrenzt wirken könnten. Trump schloss einen Bodeneinsatz nie aus.
Berichte des pakistanischen Geheimdienstes nennen Anzeichen für eine mögliche Bodenoffensive. Als mögliches Ziel gilt die Insel Kharg. Sie liegt rund 25 Kilometer vom iranischen Festland entfernt. Minen und Raketen machen eine Landung für US-Soldaten besonders gefährlich.
Auch Pickaxe Mountain wird als denkbares Ziel genannt. Wüste und Gebirge erschweren dort jeden Einsatz. Die iranischen Streitkräfte kennen das Gelände. Das erhöht das Risiko für amerikanische Soldaten.
