Louie Dampier - Late Career Spurs Highlights (OG Sharpshooter)
March 5, 1978 - The transition from the ABA to NBA was a bit of a step back for Louie Dampier; or perhaps a step forward, literally speaking. Dampier, a Kentucky legend to the core, carved out a niche at the ABA level as an early adapter of the 3-point line. Dampier was hoisting over seven 3-pointers a night as early as 1969, hitting over 36 percent. His sharpshooting both outside and inside the arc propelled him toward becoming the ABA's all-time leading scorer by the time the league merged with the NBA in 1976.By the time Dampier was picked up by the San Antonio Spurs in the dispersal draft, he was in his early 30s and entering the twilight of his career. It should be noted that in contrast to the ABA, the NBA did not have a 3-point line in the 1970s, so Dampier reverted to doing the bulk of his damage in the mid-range vicinity, shooting a career-high .509 percent from the field for the Spurs in 1978 at age 33. He retired one season prior to the NBA's introduction of the modern 3-point line.
