Zum ersten Mal seit dem verheerenden Terrorangriff der Hamas vom 7. Oktober 2023 und nach drei Jahren eines zermürbenden Krieges wählt Israel heute ein neues Parlament. Mehr als 7,3 Millionen Wahlberechtigte sind aufgerufen, über die Zukunft des Landes zu entscheiden. Etwa 70.000 Staatsbürger:innen aus aller Welt fliegen ein.Mehr als 19 Jahre ist Benjamin Netanjahu bereits an der Macht. Doch bleibt das so? Sein Herausforderer: Ex-General Gadi Eisenkot. Dieser tritt mit seiner neu gegründeten Partei Jaschar (hebräisch für „Geradeaus“) an. Eisenkot warnt vor einer fortschreitenden Spaltung und wirft der amtierenden Führung die Vernachlässigung der nationalen Sicherheit vor.
„Das Ergebnis dieser Wahl kann man nicht absehen“, sagt ARD-Korrespondentin Pia Steckelbach. „Was man sieht, ist, dass Netanjahu tatsächlich um seine Macht fürchtet. Er führt eine Kampagne der Angst.“
