India’s own GPS is back. On the night of 30 October, ISRO’s GSLV-F18 launched the NVS-03 satellite from Sriharikota. ISRO says this restores NavIC, India’s own navigation system, to its minimum working strength of four satellites. NavIC had fallen to three working satellites in March 2026, after the last atomic clock on IRNSS-1F failed. The previous replacement, NVS-02, got stuck in orbit in January 2025 because a valve did not open. This time, ISRO reportedly flew the satellite with its valves already open so the same failure could not happen twice.
Why does this matter? NavIC was born from the Kargil War of 1999, when India’s request for US GPS data was widely reported to have been refused. A system that India controls is one no foreign government can switch off in a war.
In this video, Kinjal Choudhary explains:
What happened on launch night: GSLV-F18, NVS-03 and the 18-minute flight
How NavIC fell to just 3 satellites in 2026
The stuck valve that stranded NVS-02, and ISRO’s unusual fix
Why NavIC exists: from Kargil 1999 to Operation Sindoor
Is NavIC harder to jam and spoof than GPS?
Why atomic clocks are the hard part, and India’s indigenous clock
“One Nation, One Time”: how NavIC now backs India’s official time
What the L1 signal means for your smartphone
What’s next: NVS-04, NVS-05 and the 7-satellite target
Note: NavIC is at its minimum operational configuration, not full strength. NVS-03 still has to raise itself to its final slot at 32.5° East.
