Everything We Know About Nasa's New Supersonic Jet (X-59)
Commercial aviation used to get faster, but Concorde was retired in 2003, and the world’s passenger planes quietly slowed down. Now NASA is trying to change that.
Here’s Everything We Know About Nasa's New Super Sonic Jet (X-59).
An experimental aircraft was designed to solve the biggest problem that killed supersonic travel - the sonic boom. Built by Lockheed Martin’s Skunk Works, the X-59 uses an extremely long nose, a windowless cockpit, and a revolutionary “quiet boom” design to turn the explosive shockwave of supersonic flight into a soft thump.
If the tests succeed, regulators could finally lift the decades-old ban on supersonic flight over land. That would open the door to a new generation of passenger jets capable of cutting travel times in half.
But speed comes with challenges: from fuel consumption to environmental impact.
The X-59 may determine whether supersonic travel returns, or remains a relic of the past.
