Israel accepts Trump-backed temporary ceasefire proposal with Hamas

The White House announced Thursday that Israel has agreed to a new U.S. backed proposal for a temporary ceasefire with Hamas. This follows optimistic remarks earlier in the week from President Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters that Israel “backed and supported” the new proposal.

"Israel signed off on this proposal before it was sent to Hamas," White House press secretary Karoline Levitt told reporters. "I can also confirm that those discussions are continuing, and we hope that a ceasefire in Gaza will take place so we can return all of the hostages home."

Hamas officials reacted with a reserved response to the Israeli-endorsed draft. They indicated a need for further review before providing an official response to the proposal. “The Zionist response, in essence, means perpetuating the occupation and continuing the killing and famine,” Bassem Naim, a top Hamas official, told The Associated Press.
