Nel 1988 il geofisico John Baumgardner aveva forato la stessa formazione, fermandosi alla stessa profondità e descrivendo roccia stratificata. Oggi il nuovo team parla di carbonio più alto nei suoli interni, di un radar nato nei programmi dell'aeronautica americana e di un possibile strato di legno.
