Nguồn gốc chính xác của tiếng động vẫn chưa được xác định rõ nhưng tai của ông Trump dường như chảy rất nhiều máu khi ông được đưa khỏi sân khấu.
Ông Trump nhanh chóng cúi xuống sau khi tiếng nổ xuất hiện, với âm thanh phát ra từ khán đài bên trái nơi ông đang đứng.
“Tôi thấy máu trên tai ông ấy” - ông Ron Moose, một người tham gia cuộc vận động tranh cử của ông Trump khẳng định. Sau khi tiếng nổ phát ra, mật vụ nhanh chóng bao quanh ông Trump. Đám đông bắt đầu la hét do nghe thấy tiếng nổ. Ông Trump vẫn giơ nắm đấm thể hiện sự quyết tâm về phía đám đông và được mật vụ nhanh chóng che chắn và đưa xuống sân khấu.
