Uncovering the Importance of Local Community Advocates to Prevent HIV | National Geographic

In Kisumu, Kenya, National Geographic Explorer and photographer Rena Effendi meets with Brenda Odera, a volunteer HIV prevention advocate working to expand awareness of PrEP, a medication that can help reduce the risk of HIV before exposure. After her own experience with PrEP, Brenda began volunteering in her community to connect vulnerable young women with information, resources, and local clinics. Through conversations with Brenda, Dr. Jared Olwal, a clinician at a PrEP clinic, Dr. Elizabeth Bukusi, Chief Research Officer at the Kenya Medical Research Institute, and Florence Riako Anam, Co-Executive Director of the Global Network of People Living with HIV, the story explores the importance of education, access, and confronting stigma around HIV prevention. Gilead Sciences is working with local partners to help advance efforts not only to treat HIV, but to prevent it and create a future that is HIV free.
