Ultraman (1991, Arcade) - One Credit Clear
2026 marks Ultraman's 60th anniversary, so what better time is there to post an Ultraman video? Banpresto made this single player fighting game back in 1991, and it does a pretty good job faithfully recreating the presentation of the original series. They've included pretty much all of the major monsters to fight your way through, so fans of the show will probably enjoy this to some degree. The game itself is pretty stiff, and each monster is solvable with a simple strategy, so it's not a particularly great or deep game. It's fun enough to learn and play for a day or two though, and it is at least pretty satisfying to finish each monster off with your classic beam attack.
Banpresto went on to make a conversion of this for the SNES called Ultraman: To The Future, which is how I first played it. I have vague memories of watching the show on TV when I was a kid, but I clearly remembered really liking this on the SNES. So this has been something I wanted to eventually revisit as an adult, as I got into tokusatsu again.
I actually played and uploaded this over 3 years ago, but I never posted the video. My memory of any details is pretty fuzzy at this point, but I know I had some fun with this. It's not a great game at all, but like I said before, you can learn it in a day and get the 1CC. Nowadays there are probably better Ultraman games to choose from (the PS2 games look good), so this game's appeal might just be nostalgia for people who played it in their childhood.
Actually, now that I'm watching this again, I think you instantly lose if you miss the final shot against Zetton. That's pretty punishing if that's the case, but I don't clearly remember... it would make the final battle a bit more intense though.
Anyway, it's a fun game. I doubt it'll ever get ported to console, so check it out on MAME if you're a fan of the series.
