1920s Steam-powered Model Boat [Restoration]
This restoration is on a H.E. Boucher Manufacturing Company model boat with functional steam engine. The company operated from 1905-1943, but the castings on the metal parts of this boat dates it to be made no later than 1922. I believe this model of boat to be the "Boucher Advanced Construction Set", which was a more complicated boat model that mimicked the building process of a life-sized boat.The model was in pieces and clearly had many signs of aging, but the hull was generally in decent shape for its age. The model kit did not come with anything above the deck, so the builder made a cabin out of an old cigar box of the time. I loved the "folk art" style that this boat had and it was a real challenge to incorporate that into the restoration. Usually I am trying to restore something back to how it originally looked from the factory, but in this case, I need to restore it to how it looked when the builder was finished. This means all the little handmade imperfections need to be part of the restoration, so it cannot look perfect, and forced me to purposely make any replacements or repairs match that aesthetic.
The actually steam engine was in great shape as it is almost entirely made of brass and weathered the years well. The boiler and burner were in similar condition and I was really happy to see the boiler hold pressure steady overnight.
As for the painting of the boat, I decided to do my own thing as there seem to be at least 3 different layers and colours that were changed over the years.
I was very nervous to finally test this in the water as having it immediately sink or light on fire were real probabilities.
