Bereits wenige Jahre nach ihrer Gründung hatten die Islamisten 1996 erstmals die Kontrolle in Afghanistan. Nach den Anschlägen auf das World Trade Center 2001 beendete das US-Militär ihre Herrschaft.Seit der Rückkehr der Taliban 2021 gibt es erneut viele Menschenrechtsverletzungen. Menschenrechtsorganisationen sprechen von einer „humanitären Katastrophe“: Millionen Menschen hungern. Frauen sind praktisch rechtlos und aus dem öffentlichen Leben weitgehend verschwunden. Wer sich dagegen wehrt, riskiert sein Leben.
