Today marks the second day of the special session of Parliament. The three bills related to women's reservation, which were introduced in the Lok Sabha yesterday, continue to be the subject of discussion today. Today, the Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, is also scheduled to speak in the Lok Sabha; he is expected to address the House at 1:45 PM. Home Minister Amit Shah will respond to the discussion, following which voting on the bills will take place at 4:00 PM. Passing these bills will not be an easy task for the government, as a two-thirds majority is required for their enactment. The Opposition has already clarified that it is not opposed to the Women's Reservation Bill itself; however, they object to the government's attempt to link it with the delimitation process. Meanwhile, political parties from the southern states have a distinct concern: they allege that the government is planning to dilute the voice of the South within Parliament. All in all, the current standoff revolves around three key issues: the first is the demand for a caste census; the second concerns the North-South divide; and the third—the issue over which the ruling dispensation and the Opposition are currently at loggerheads—is delimitation. The pivotal question—whether the bills related to women's reservation will be passed in the Lok Sabha today or remain in limbo—is being watched closely by everyone. All eyes are on the "numbers game" between the government and the Opposition—specifically, which side will vote in favor, which will vote against, and whether or not any cross-voting will occur.
