Poland shoots down Russian drones that "repeatedly violated" its airspace | DW News

The Polish army says it has shot down Russian drones that it says "repeatedly violated" its airspace during an attack on Ukraine. It called the incident an act of aggression, that posed a real threat to the safety of its citizens.

Writing on social media, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Polish airspace had been violated by a huge number of Russian drones. Those drones that posed a direct threat were shot down. He also said he was in constant communication with the Secretary General of NATO and Poland's allies.

The drone incursion comes as defense ministers from Poland and four other European nations are set to meet in London to discuss improving Ukraine's defensive capabilities. It's a critical time for Kyiv, as the Russian army tries to maximize its battlefield gains before temperatures drop. It's focused on where fighting between the Ukrainian army and Russian proxy forces began back in 2014. Since the full-scale invasion of 2022, Russian troops were able to occupy nearly all of Luhansk region. But in neighboring Donetsk, it’s a different story. Ukraine still controls about a quarter of the territory, including the major cities of Slovyansk, Kramatorsk and Pokrovsk. Before the war, this was Ukraine’s most densely populated area.
