Indonesia ferry disaster: Search continues for 129 missing in Java Sea
Search and rescue operations are continuing in Indonesia’s Java Sea for 129 people missing after the Virgo Transport 8 ferry capsized while travelling from Surabaya to Banjarmasin.The vessel, a 1987 Japanese-built ferry that had been operating in Indonesia for just two months, encountered severe weather and suddenly tilted without warning. Specialized underwater units are being deployed to search the wreckage.
Relatives of missing passengers are gathering at ports and waiting for news of their loved ones. The disaster has renewed concerns over maritime safety in Indonesia, where ferries are an essential means of transport but deadly accidents remain frequent amid poor safety enforcement.
