💈Stepping Back in Time: $3 Old School Taiwanese Auntie Barbershop. (Kaohsiung 🇹🇼)
I'm walking deep into the local streets of Kaohsiung, Taiwan, I set out on a mission to find the most authentic, off-the-beaten-path barbershop I could possibly uncover, and I definitely found it. Walking into this ultra-local spot, the tension was instantly palpable, since nobody in the shop spoke a single word of English, and as you guys know, I don't speak any Chinese.There were a few awkward moments of gesturing and pointing as I tried to explain what I was looking for, but sometimes the greatest travel adventures start just outside your comfort zone.
Once I finally sat down in the vintage barber chair, a wonderfully skilled Taiwanese auntie took over, and it was pure magic. We communicated entirely through the universal language of traditional grooming.
This female Taiwanese barber treated me to one of the most meticulous, relaxing hot towel straight razor shaves I have had in a very long time. The precision of the straight razor, the soothing heat of the towels, and her absolute mastery of the craft completely transcended our intense language barrier, turning a nerve-wracking start into an incredibly zen, spa-like experience.
By the time she finished up, the initial awkwardness had completely melted away into huge, genuine smiles all around. The most mind-blowing part? This flawless straight razor shave, along with the ear cleaning service I’m getting next, cost me a grand total of just $3 USD, or about 100 Taiwanese Dollars! It is absolute top-tier local service on an unbeatable budget.
As I finally packed up my camera gear and headed out, the incredible warmth of the Taiwanese people shined through and all the female auntie barbers gathered at the front glass windows, smiling and waving bye-bye to me as I walked down the street.
