ACE COMBAT 7 - Full Game, All Aces, All S-Ranks (Ace Difficulty)
With Ace Combat 8 releasing, I wanted to go back and fully complete Ace Combat 7 before playing the new one. This is a full playthrough of the campaign on its highest difficulty, Ace, with S-ranks on every stage, and every hidden Ace pilot shot down in every mission.I first played this on the Xbox One maybe 6 or 7 years ago, when it was on Game Pass, I think. I thought it was awesome back then, but I just did one playthrough and never went any deeper. That was always something I meant to go back and do, so when AC8 was still on the horizon, it felt like the right time to finish this one off.
My main goal was just to get an S-rank and shoot down every Ace in each mission. Aces are special 'named' ships that appear when you meet a hidden criteria in each mission - things like scoring a certain amount of points in a short amount of time, reaching a destination very quickly, flying through tight spaces, and all kinds of different things. It usually isn't necessary to find the Aces in order to get an S-rank, but completing these extra tasks can make some missions quite a bit harder, and it turns them into a fun challenge that's really satisfying to complete. I don't have much experience with this series (I've only played AC6 before), so while it can be challenging, it's not so hard that you need to be a master or anything.
Honestly, one of the most impressive things about this game is how they manage to make most of the missions feel so different from each other. If it were me, I'd have a hell of a time coming up with anything besides "shoot all the enemies" or "fly through some obstacles", but they go way further than that. There are missions where they make the clouds and wind play major roles as obstacles, missions where you have a special sub-weapon you need to use, escort missions, base defenses, environmental destruction, and sometimes you even have to identify enemies first, otherwise you can shoot down allies. They do a great job of mixing it all up, to varying degrees of success. The only missions I'm not a fan of are ones that have a lot of downtime while the story plays out, or they ease you into new mechanics. It's not a big deal, those sections are just boring. Other than that though, the game is 98% awesome from start to finish.
There's a wide range of different ships and weapons to use as well, all unlocked through an upgrade tree. Some things can get pretty expensive, so it kinda limits you to a certain amount of ships as you progress through the game. The idea is probably to get you to try everything out and find which weapons work best for you, rather than overwhelming you with tons of different options. It works pretty well, and there is no definitive "best" ship that can cover all bases. Some ships have sub-weapons that are really strong for ground enemies, others are more dogfight focused with single or multi-rocket options. One ship even has some Star Wars lasers.
To complete this video, I wanted to use as many different things as I could. I doubt these are the "best" choices for every mission, but everything works perfectly fine to get the job done.
So I loved playing this - it's one of the best games I've played all year. I think some people who aren't familiar with Ace Combat might be put off by it looking hard to play, or thinking it's a boring flight simulator, but these are straight up classically designed action games. Your goal is to complete each mission quickly, shoot down as many enemies as you can, get a high score, and collect those sweet S-ranks. Then they throw a melodramatic story on top of all of it. It's not hard at all to play, so I highly recommend checking either this, or Ace Combat 8 out, which I'm 100% sure will be one of the best games of 2026.
