US-Iran War: UN Security Council Divided Over Iran Sanctions And Nuclear Programme | WION Originals
The United Nations Security Council witnessed sharp divisions as major powers clashed over Iran’s nuclear programme and the re-imposition of sanctions. The meeting was chaired by the United States, with U.S. Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz presiding over the session.Russia and China attempted to block the discussion on a committee responsible for overseeing sanctions on Iran. However, the move failed after the council voted 11 in favour, 2 against and 2 abstentions, allowing the agenda to proceed.
Waltz accused Moscow and Beijing of attempting to shield Tehran and urged all UN member states to enforce an arms embargo on Iran, including restrictions on missile technology transfers and financial assets.
Russia rejected the U.S. claims, arguing Washington and its allies had exaggerated Iran’s nuclear ambitions to justify military action. China also criticised the United States, accusing it of undermining diplomacy and escalating tensions in the Middle East.
The meeting highlighted growing divisions among major powers over Iran’s nuclear activities and the broader conflict in the region.
