Hollywood is supposedly terrified of AI taking over filmmaking.
But here's the problem: Hollywood has been using software, algorithms, simulations, machine learning, massive server farms, and increasingly automated VFX workflows for decades. So where exactly do we draw the line between art and AI slop?
In this episode, Caya goes back to the CGI that made him want to study Digital Animation: Davy Jones in Pirates of the Caribbean.
We break down how that character was actually made, why modern CGI can somehow look worse 20 years later, how brutal the VFX industry has become, and what changes when generative AI enters the production pipeline.
We also look at Netflix's The Eternaut, AI-assisted VFX, rotoscoping, render farms, and the thousands of artists doing the invisible work behind the movies we watch.
Because maybe the real question isn't whether AI was used.
It's how the work was made, how much human craft went into it, and whether technology is helping artists—or simply replacing them.
