«Il presente è il momento più pericoloso, disperato e terribile. Penso che tutti sentiamo che la sicurezza, che pensavamo di aver trovato, è scomparsa: il mondo si sta fratturando davanti a noi, le persone si sentono minacciate e sono stati trovati nuovi modi per sfruttare i lavoratori, i contratti sono spariti e c'è tanta povertà». Queste le parole con cui il regista britannico Ken Loach ha iniziato la sua lectio magistralis, collegato con l'Università di Bologna in videoconferenza da Londra, dove il rettore Giovanni Molari lo ha raggiunto per conferirgli la laurea ad honorem in scienze filosofiche. Loach, dopo aver ripercorso alcuni momenti importanti della sua carriera cinematografica, ha detto la sua opinione sulla politica attuale: «Nel mio Paese, tra i più ricchi al mondo, la disuguaglianza è fortissima, la gente muore senza carità e c'è tanta rabbia tra i giovani». In più, ha aggiunto, «è di nuovo con noi l'estrema destra, quella che pensavamo non avremmo più visto, persone che forse non sono fasciste ma che usano quelle tattiche». Sul fronte della politica internazionale, poi, Loach ha detto che «l'occupazione militare e l'illegalità sono oggi tollerate dai governi occidentali: è una vergogna che il mio Paese stia inviando armi al governo che sta compiendo un genocidio», in Palestina. Alla fine, il regista britannico si è appellato «ai miei amici stimati di Bologna, agli intellettuali: posso far parte del modo in cui voi combattete tutto questo?
