Giovanni Maria Mastai Ferretti, salito al soglio pontificio come Pio IX, fu l’ultimo Papa Re di Roma e l’ultimo eletto al Quirinale, il 16 giugno 1846, al termine di uno dei conclavi più brevi della storia, tenutosi nella Cappella Paolina.Il conclave non si svolse nella Cappella Sistina, come da tradizione, perché era stata profanata da Napoleone durante l’arresto di Pio VII: si scelse dunque il Quirinale per riaffermare con forza il potere temporale del papato.Pio IX sarà ricordato come il papa liberale, almeno all’inizio.
