Così Papa Benedetto XVI si esprime nei confronti dell'ipotesi di una dimissione non valida, parlando anche della nota questione del munus petrino e del ministerium. "Dire - continua nella lettera - che nella mia rinuncia avrei lasciato 'solo l’esercizio del ministero e non anche il munus' è contrario alla chiara dottrina dogmatica-canonica". Secondo Andrea Cionci, giornalista e scrittore de "Il Codice #Ratzinger" che dal 2020 segue la vicenda da vicino, il significato delle parole di Papa Ratzinger sarebbe stato travisato.
