Largo appena 33 chilometri nel punto più angusto, funge da arteria vitale per il commercio energetico: qui transita circa il 20% del petrolio mondiale e una quota simile di gas naturale liquefatto (LNG), equivalenti a oltre 20 milioni di barili al giorno. Senza alternative immediate per i produttori del Golfo Persico come Arabia Saudita, Iraq e Qatar, qualsiasi interruzione qui può scatenare onde d'urto nei mercati mondiali. Soprattutto, in questo momento, per l'Europa, che, distaccatasi dalla fornitura russa dopo l'inizio del conflitto in Ucraina, si ritrova ora ad affrontare una possibile crisi energetica.
I recenti attacchi USA all'#Iran hanno portato a sequestri di navi e minacce di chiusura, amplificate dalle sanzioni americane sul nucleare iraniano. Oggi la situazione è esplosiva. Il 28 febbraio, attacchi congiunti USA-Israele hanno ucciso il leader supremo iraniano Ali Khamenei, scatenando ritorsioni. La Guardia Rivoluzionaria Islamica ha dichiarato lo stretto "chiuso", minacciando di affondare qualsiasi nave in transito. I prezzi del Brent sono schizzati oltre gli 80 dollari al barile, e analisti prevedono picchi a 100 se il blocco persiste. L'impatto maggiore ricade sull'Asia: l'84% del petrolio che passa da Hormuz va lì, con la Cina che assorbe il 38% del totale – circa il 40% delle sue importazioni. Questo la rende vulnerabile, ma Pechino ha riserve e alternative come Russia e Africa. Come ci ha spiegato in diretta il professor Antonio Maria Rinaldi - ex europarlamentare e candidato Sindaco al Comune di Roma per la Lega - questo controllo sullo stretto può essere "uno strumento geopolitico" che gli #USA possono usare per strozzare la #Cina.
