How Iran-US-Israel relations turned from allies to decades of hostility
Iran and Israel were once close allies before the 1979 Iranian revolution transformed them into adversaries. In 1948, the Shah's Iran was among the first nations to recognise Israel, with the two countries exchanging military training and oil.The 1979 revolution that ousted the Shah and established the Islamic Republic severed those ties, beginning decades of hostility. In the 1980s, the Iran-Contra scandal revealed secret US–Israeli arms sales to Iran during the Iran–Iraq war.
Under Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel pursued covert operations against Iran and opposed the 2015 nuclear deal, which the US later abandoned under President Trump. In 2025, Israel and the US launched strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, further escalating regional tensions.
