Nocebo: the dark side of knowledge | Cor de Kroon | TEDxHarderwijk
NOTE FROM TED: Please do not look to this talk for medical advice and always consult a medical professional. Individual patient outcomes can be variable and experts working in this field call for further research to determine best practices for prognosis communication and its impact on clinical outcomes. This talk only represents the speaker's personal views and understanding of the nocebo effect, doctor-patient communication, and mortality. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: http://storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/tedx_content_guidelines.pdfIn his TEDx talk Cor de Kroon, a gynaecologist specialized in cancer surgery, draws attention for the fact that knowledge by itself may have negative effects because of the nocebo-effect: the nasty brother of the well known placebo-effect. Simply being aware of possible side-effects or poor prognosis of medical treatments increases the risk of those side-effect or poor prognosis to become reality. He adressess both patients and fellow physician to alter their behavior in order to reduce the impact of nocebo and consequently definetely increase the quality of life of patients and maybe even the length of it.
As an experienced gynaecological oncologist, working at the Leiden University Medical Center in the Netherlands, Cor de Kroon treats women suffering from gynaecological cancer. Talking with these women he became more and more convinced that for optimal health care evidence based guidelines and strong regional learning health care network are mandatory and may even be more impactful than yet another loudly applauded innovative therapy, usually only effective for just a small subgroup of patients. Although grown up in the era of ‘shared decision making’ and a strong advocate of empowered patients, Cor started to question the common habbit to share detailed information about prognosis to cancer patients because ‘the power of nocebo’ should not be neglected. His professional aim for the coming years is to combine the best of both worlds to optimize healthcare for all individual patients. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx Receive SMS online on sms24.me
