LIVE | MSC 2026: Jaishankar Hails India’s "Strategic Autonomy" on Russian Oil Imports
At the Munich Security Conference, India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar firmly reiterated New Delhi’s commitment to “strategic autonomy,” stressing that India’s energy decisions are driven by national interest — not external pressure. Responding to questions on Russian oil imports, Jaishankar said Indian oil companies base their purchases on costs, risks, and availability in a complex global market. He made it clear that India retains the right to make independent decisions, even if they do not align with Western expectations. His remarks come after US assertion that India will reduce Russian oil imports, following a trade framework that includes the removal of 25% American tariffs linked to the issue. Jaishankar underlined the need to revitalise ties with Europe and reiterated India’s long-standing position on reforming the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). On the sidelines of the conference, Jaishankar held multiple bilateral meetings, including discussions with counterparts from Germany, Austria, Canada, Ukraine, Serbia, and the Czech Republic. He also participated in a G-4 meeting and engaged with G7 foreign ministers.---
