What if everyone was born without hair? How would people with hair be treated? Although at first this question may seem absurd, it can reveal some very powerful things about the way society treats people who are different than the “norm”. Our world can often horribly ridicule people who are different than whatever is the standard of beauty for the time, which can deeply affect mental health and self-worth, as I’ve personally experienced. Tonight I would like spread the positive message that anyone, regardless of their looks or insecurities, is beautiful and worthy of love.My name is Juliana Burke. I am a freshman at FSI, an artist of many things, but my main passion in life is being a singer/songwriter. I have been writing songs since I was ten to handle the emotional struggles that came with the pandemic. Since then I’ve had the opportunities to preform at LEAF, the Women to the Front festival, private events, as well as frequent impromptu jam sessions at school. These experiences have helped me realize that creating music that helps people feel safe, seen and heard is a powerful bond and I hope that one day I am able to reach and connect with people through my music no matter where they are in life.
