Belum genap setahun bersaing di sirkuit elite Women's Tennis Association (WTA), Janice Tjen sudah menorehkan sejarah bagi tenis Indonesia.Dengan berhasil menembus babak kedua Wimbledon, Janice menjadi petenis tunggal Indonesia pertama yang melakukannya sejak Angelique Widjaja pada 2003 silam.
"Pastinya senang bisa menjadi bagian dari sejarah tenis Indonesia. Salah satu impian saya adalah bisa bermain di Wimbledon," kata Janice.
Langkah Janice di Wimbledon 2026 memang telah terhenti. Namun, sejumlah orang meyakini bahwa ini baru permulaan dalam karier Janice.
Pelatihnya, Chris Bint, menyebut bahwa Indonesia "sudah bertahun-tahun tidak memiliki pemain tunggal di level ini".
Sejumlah mantan petenis Indonesia, termasuk Yayuk Basuki, juga menyebut bahwa Janice adalah petenis yang "spesial".
Pada 23 Februari 2026, Janice berhasil mencapai peringkat dunia nomor 36 di WTA (organisasi tenis putri profesional). Padahal, dia memulai tahun 2025 dengan ranking 578.
Itu adalah capaian tertinggi bagi petenis Indonesia sejak Yayuk Basuki meraih peringkat 19 WTA pada Oktober 1997 silam.
Karier Janice selama satu tahun terakhir memang melesat bak meteor setelah lulus dari liga tenis kampus AS alias NCAA.
Dalam 20 tahun terakhir, hanya ada tiga petenis non-warga negara AS di dunia yang berhasil menembus jajaran 50 besar WTA setelah menempuh jalur liga kampus ini.
Salah satunya adalah Janice.
